Shippeitaro | A Japanese Folktale of Phantom Cats and a Brave Hound | A Simple Tale
Simple Tales presents Mary F. Nixon-Roulet's classic Japanese folktale Shippeitaro—a captivating and wondrous story of a ruined forest temple, a terrifying mountain sacrifice, and a clever warrior who discovers the one creature the monsters truly fear.
When a wandering soldier named Wakiki seeks shelter in an ancient forest shrine, he overhears a band of monstrous phantom cats dancing by moonlight and chanting the name of a dog they dare not face: Shippeitaro. Seeking help for a grief-stricken village forced to sacrifice its fairest maidens to an unseen demon, Wakiki borrows the legendary hound and lays a trap that destroys the evil spirits forever.

A treasured gem of Japanese folklore. Shippeitaro reminds us that courage finds a way into the dark, but true victory comes from listening closely, trusting others, and standing together against fear.
