Game Play :
Tales of Xillia consists primarily of two major areas: the field map and a battle screen. The field map is a realistically scaled 3D environment traversed by foot. On the field maps, various skits between the characters can be viewed. They involve animated character portraits, subtitles, and full voice acting. Skits concern anything from character development to side details. The battle screen is a 3D representation of an area, in which the player commands the characters in battles against CPU-controlled enemies. Players will be able to choose either Milla or Jude at the outset of their adventure through the world of Rieze Maxia, where humans and spirits live together in harmony. The kingdom of Rashugal has been experimenting with a powerful device that has been draining the mana from the world. Realizing the harm it is inflicting on the world, Milla and Jude set off on a journey to destroy it and restore the mana back to the world. Over the course of the game their lives will intersect with a vast ensemble of characters that will teach them the strength of unwavering conviction.

During battle sequences, the game uses the Dual Raid Linear Motion Battle System. Four characters are chosen to battle and characters not controlled by a player are controlled by artificial intelligence with instructions set by the players beforehand. The "Assault Counter" (AC) denotes the number of skills and actions a character can perform. Usage brings the AC down and is recharged over time. Skill usage costs "Technical Points" (TP) which can be refilled by attacking or using items. During battle, characters can link to each other to perform unified attacks.

Plot :

Two thousand years ago, the spirit Maxwell divided the world in two; the two worlds are now known as Rieze Maxia and Elenpios. Rieze Maxia contains evolved humans who are able to utilize mana; as a result, they live in harmony with spirits and are able to use magic. Meanwhile, Elenpios citizens are a technologically advanced society which are dependent on a power source called Gin; Gins uses the lives of spirits around it to supply power. Maxwell created a barrier around Rieze Maxia to prevent Elenpios' Gins from harming the spirits. Twenty years prior to the present, Elenpios was able to briefly bypass the barrier and formed a terrorist organization known as Exodus which intends to destroy the barrier to resupply Elenpios' diminishing spirit supply. Rieze Maxia currently consists of two countries, Rashugal and Auj Oule.

In the present, medical student Jude Mathis investigates a military research facility after treating patients with suspicious injuries. There, he meets Milla Maxwell, the successor to Maxwell. Together, they discover the research facility created a Gin-powered weapon called the Lance of Kresnik. Milla takes the key to the Lance but her spirits are captured as a result, rendering her powerless. Jude and Milla travel to confront Nachtigal, Rashugal's king who endorsed the Lance's creation. During their journey, they are joined by Alvin, Elize Lutus, and Rowen J. Illbert. They fail to defeat Nachtigal and Milla is injured as a result. Jude takes Milla to his hometown to treat her injuries and is joined by Leia Rolando. The party returns, defeats Nachtigal, and discover that the Lance has been relocated. They discover that Gaius, the king of the opposing country Auj Oule, has the Lance and intends to unite Rieze Maxia with its power. However, the Lance's function is revealed to be a barrier destroyer; its brief activation allows Exodus to lead Elenpios' invasion of Rieze Maxia. The party infiltrate Exodus's ship and kills their leader which ends the invasion. The spirit Muzét then traps the party on the exploding ship, intending to kill everyone who knows about the barrier's existence. Milla sacrifices herself to free the party.

After a period of mourning, Jude leads the party to persuade Maxwell to dispel the barrier and to find a way to save both Rieze Maxia and Elenpios. The party is reunited with Milla, reborn as a spirit, and are able to convince Maxwell. However, Gaius and Musee believe the party to be naive and uses the Lance of Kresnik to trap Maxwell as they intend on sustaining the barrier and letting Elenpios die off. Maxwell sends the party to an Elenpios city before he is completely subdued. There, the party learns about life in Elenpios and an ongoing research on Origins, a power source harmless to spirits. With renewed conviction, the party returns to defeat Gaius and Muzét, and to free Maxwell. Maxwell dispels the barrier and disperses its energy around the world to temporarily power Gins until the completion of Origins. To escape the Gins' effects, the spirits return to the spirit world and close the gateway to the human world. The party returns to their normal lives with Jude joining an Origin research team, Milla resuming her role as Maxwell, and Gaius uniting Rieze Maxia as a single country.
