Hemlis - The "Secure" messenger!

Did you hear about "Snowden"? Do you possibly understand what level of privacy breach that incident brought light upon? If yes and you are worried about the possible gloomy future of your known internet applications and communication possibilities, you might want to see what "Hemlis" is. The Swedish word Hemlis means "secret". This post is only about the preview of this application and please refrain yourself from finding a download link just yet!

Hemlis is(or will be) a truly secured messenger primarily intended for "iOS" and "Android" platforms. Soon after the recent shocking revelation of how "National Security Agency" and some/many Government or, Non-Government institutions could get hands on pretty private properties of citizens without any consent or, court order, it is not anymore any hidden secret that no text messaging or communication platform is not safe for your privacy. If you have done any kind of communication over internet or, through your mobile devices then you must assume some people are watching over it whether you like it or not.

Peter Sunde the co-founder of "The Pirate Bay" along with some of his co-developers has started "Hemlis" initiative to cure this trend of "unsecured security". From what I could understand the application along with the infrastructure are in the development stage still. But the possibility of seeing it in action in not so distant future is pretty high. The process of fundraising is on the way for development.

This is what said on the official site of Hemlis( -

"Normally security results in a complex and unfriendly user experience. It should not be that way. is a messenger for everyone so we are dedicated to create the most user friendly messenger ever."

Hemlis means "Secret" in Swedish

We love the internet, social networks and the power it gives for sharing and social connections. When sharing something on Twitter or Instagram the whole world can see it and that is great!

What we don't love though is that private communication has more or less turned into an open stream for companies and governments to listen into.

Companies like Facebook, Twitter, Apple and Google have been forced to open up their systems and hand out information about their users. At the same time they have been forbidden to tell anyone about it!

We're building a message app where no one can listen in, not even us. We would rather close down the service before letting anyone in.

Secrets are only secrets if they are secret.

Some self-explanatory questions and answers from the official site.

When will be released?
The simple answer is, when it's done. We will of course release it as fast as possible, as we want this ourselves! You can follow the development on our blog plus Twitter and Facebook.

What will the money be used for?
To fund development of the apps, plus setup and running the infrastructure needed. And nothing else, but coffee.

What if you don't get enough money?
Then we will use what we get to build anyway. But if we get too little to manage at all we will refund the payments.

Will the app be free?
Yes and no. We think that encrypted messaging should be available for everyone. But as we will not fund the app via ads or selling your data, we do plan to charge for unlocking of extra features, like sending image messages etc.

Why the name?
Hemlis means "Secret" in Swedish. And .is is the top level domain of Iceland, a small but beautiful nation in northern europe - quite close to Sweden! The Icelanders are famous for data protection and it's one of few top level domains that has proven that they do not cave in to pressure easily.

Is it really secure?
Yes and no. Nothing is ever 100% secure. There will not be any way for someone without access to your phone to read anything, but with access to your phone they can of course read the messages. Just as they can use any other app you have installed.

What will the codes unlock?
It will give you access to extended features of like sending image messages and other stuff in the future. Pre-register username will let you register your username before the app is released.

Can I give unlock codes to my friends?
Sure, that is why you can fund to get multiple codes.

What platforms will the app be released for?
We will start with iOS and Android. Other platforms might come later.

Who is doing this? is built by Peter Sunde (@brokep), Leif Högberg (@leihog) & Linus Olsson (@bonq).

Why is different from WhatsApp, MessageMe, iMessage etc?
Our focus is your privacy so we are building everything from software to company structure to protect that. The others are focused on maximising profit.

I want to send you Bitcoins anonymously, what is your Bitcoin wallet?

What technology will use?
We are building on top of proven technologies, such as XMPP with PGP.

Can I e-mail you?
Yes, press(at)

So lets just keep our fingers crossed for the release of this promising application and to expand itself to other platforms.
